“O Samba e o Tango”

African music has had a marked influence on all regional music of the American continent; from American blues and jazz, to Cuban son, Colombian vallenato, Venezuelan joropo, Peruvian marinera, Brazilian samba and Argentine tango. These last two genres, which define the socio-cultural identity of their respective countries, were born and developed in parallel in the same decades of the last century. Their origins and their evolution present very distinctive characteristics that make their joint analysis very enriching both in the historical and musicological planes as well as in the strictly technical-musical ones. The emblematic Brazilian singer Carmen Miranda knew how to express the way of growth and maturity of these rhythms in her famous song "O Samba e o Tango", so with this quote I present in this workshop a complete panorama of the differences and similarities between the emblematic music of Rio de Janeiro and the Rio de la Plata, the samba and the tango.
